About three years ago, an unstained wooden tower stood by the highway in Victor, Montana, just 35 miles north of the filming location for Yellowstone. The headset decorator for a new spinoff series, 1923, featuring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, contacted us seeking a rustic ranch windmill for the show.
The team provided a 10′ windmill on a 30′ tower, which the production then aged further with paint and chemicals to create an even more weathered appearance. This windmill design, dating back to the late 1800s, was historically accurate for the series.
It is notable that in 1892, the Aermotor Company of Chicago sold 20,000 metal-bladed windmills, and by 1915, they introduced the oil bath gearbox, ensuring all parts operated continuously in oil. This design has remained virtually unchanged for nearly 110 years due to its proven effectiveness. The windmill featured in the 1923 series is a testament to this enduring legacy.
